Deployment hanging or times out on vSphere with error: Task xxx timeout

Environment

Pivotal Cloud Foundry 1.10 and 1.11

Symptom

After clicking on "Apply changes" and deploying with Ops Manager on vSphere, the deployment either hangs indefinitely or returns an error:

Task xxx timeout

Cause

When making large deployments with a large number of threads, such as ERT with the default 32 threads, the Ops Manager 1.11 BOSH Director VM will run out of physical memory and begin to swap. If the performance of the BOSH datastore is also slow at this moment, swapping will make the timeout error much more likely.

Resolution

To work around this issue, retry after selecting a director VM size that has 8 GB of memory or more.

Important Information

If your storage has a low total bandwidth, such as a testing lab with a small local disk array, we also recommend you decrease the number of max threads to a lower number, such as 4. A reduced Max Threads count will prevent the BOSH Director from making too many simultaneous IaaS operations at once, and reduce the possibility of the director itself waiting for too long for storage operations which result in the timeout error.

You can find this configuration in the Ops Manager Director tile “Director Config” section:
