[Archived] The Pros and Cons of 32-bit or 64-bit Apache httpd (2010339)

Purpose

To provide a comparison of the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Apache httpd.

Resolution

You have a choice of either the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Apache httpd 2.2 when using Pivotal Web Server 5.x. The differences between the two versions include:

  • The 64-bit version allows for more resource intensive operations. An example of an application that would benefit from this is very large image rendering.
  • The 64-bit version allows for more child processes to be spawned.
  • The 32-bit version will run, on average, 15% to 30% faster than the 64-bit version due to the increased size of memory pointers.
