License required for VMware vFabric tc Server 2.x (2014000)

Purpose

This article provides information on installing a vFabric tc Server license key. It also clarifies when you need to install a license file, and provides links to the documentation which describe how to install the product license key.

Note: You can view vFabric tc Server license keys in My VMware. For more information, see Viewing license keys in My VMware (2006831).

Note: This article applies only to the licensing requirements of vFabric tc Server Runtime. For instructions regarding the license requirements for Hyperic, a product that is bundled with vFabric tc Server, see Install or Configure vFabric Hyperic License in the vFabric 5 Documentation Center.

Resolution

This table illustrates the license requirements for the vFabric tc Server runtime:

Version Environment License Required License Type
2.0.x Hardware or VMware virtual machine No
2.1.x Hardware or VMware virtual machine No
2.5.x Hardware or VMware virtual machine No
2.6.x, 2.7.x, 2.8.x Hardware Yes Local
2.6.x, 2.7.x, 2.8.x VMware virtual machine Yes vCenter Integrated or Local
2.9.x and greater Hardware, VMware virtual machine, Amazon EC2 Yes vCenter Integrated, Standalone or Local

To explain the table further, when using vFabric tc Server Runtime version 2.0.x, 2.1.x or 2.5.x, a license key is not required to run the product, regardless of the environment where the software is installed (such as on physical hardware, or on a VMware virtual machine).

With the release of vFabric tc Server 2.6.x, the product now requires a license key. If the product is deployed to an environment running on physical hardware, it uses a local license key. For instructions on activating a local license file, see Activate a Local vFabric tc Server License in the vFabric 5 Documentation Center.

If the vFabric tc Server Runtime is being deployed to a VMware virtual machine configured through VMware vCenter Server, you then have the option to use the vFabric Licensing Server. With the licensing server installed, the vFabric tc Server Runtime connects to the licensing server and automatically acquires a license. When using the licensing server, install your tc Server licenses there. For instructions on installing a license key into the vFabric License Server, see Activate vFabric Platform Licenses in the vFabric 5 Documentation Center.

With the release of vFabric tc Server 2.9.x, you now have the option to use the vFabric License Server when running tc Server on physical hardware, a VMware virtual machine, an Amazon EC2 instance or any combination of the three.  For more information on these new features, please see the vFabric Suite Licensing section of the documentation.

Additional Information

Here are a few additional notes that should help to clarify the licensing requirements for vFabric tc Server Runtime:

  • With versions 2.6.x, 2.7.x and 2.8.x, the vFabric Standard and vFabric Advanced product suites are designed to run on VMware virtual machines.  Using the tc Server Runtime with these suites requires a license and the vFabric License Server.

  • With version 2.9.x, the vFabric Standard and vFabric Advanced product suites are no longer restricted to running on VMware virtual machines.  With this release, tc Server can be run on physical hardware, VMware virtual machines, Amazon EC2 instances or some combination of the three.

  • If you purchased vFabric tc Server "a la carte" or "standalone", you will be using the local license method. The vFabric Licensing Server is only available for use with the vFabric Standard or Advanced suites.
