Greenplum Error "Could not Create Shared Memory Segment: Invalid Argument"

Environment

  • Pivotal Greenplum Database (GPDB) all versions
  • Operating System- Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.x

Symptom

Pivotal Greenplum may not be able to start and will give the following error message:

"could not create shared memory segment: Invalid argument (pg_shmem.c:136),Failed "

Cause

When the max_connections is set very high in a database, the database may not be able to start due to not having sufficient available shared memory.

Resolution

You will need to reduce the value of the parameter max_connections.
