PHD stack component fails to start with: "Unable to allocate bit map for parallel garbage collection for the requested heap size"

Environment

  • PCC 2.2.1
  • PHD 1.1.1.0
  • ISILON

Scenario

You have just deployed PHD successfully. In this case, it was onto an Isilon appliance. When you start the cluster one or more of the Hadoop stack components fail to start.

Symptom

Error occurred during initialization of VM
Unable to allocate bit map for parallel garbage collection for the requested heap size.
Error: Could not create the Java Virtual Machine.
Error: A fatal exception has occurred. Program will exit.

Cause

You are possibly using a buggy version of Java JDK. Check that the JDK you deployed with is supported by Pivotal.

For example, if you deployed Pivotal Hadoop with jdk-1.7.0_67, then you may see the symptom/errors.

Fix

Stop all currently running PHD services:

icm_client stop -l clusterid

Uninstall the current JDK from each and every cluster node:

yum erase jdk-1.7.0_67

Now install a supported version of JDK, like jdk-1.7.0_51 on each cluster node.

rpm -ivh jdk-7u51-linux-x64.rpm
