PivotalVRP for HAWQ

Pre-Installation Checklist (Document Version 36.0)

Please make sure the machine you have intended for the PivotalVRP deployment meets the following criteria.




Requirements for the MoreVRP Server (Engine)

Console Operating System

·       Windows 64 bit OS


Up to 128 segments : 8 Cores or better*

Up to 192 segments : 16 cores or better

Up to 288 segments : 22 cores or better

Up to 384 segments : 26 cores or better

Up to 480 segments : 32 cores or better

* based on moderate traffic

For VM environments make sure the actual resources match requirements.



Up to 128 segments : 12GB RAM or better*

Up to 192 segments : 24 GB RAM or better

Up to 288 segments : 36 GB RAM cores or better

Up to 384 segments : 48 GB RAM cores or better

Up to 480 segments : 60 GB RAM cores or better


200GB for ~1 months of repository. (per DCA)

Add more according to your requirements

(HD estimated space is based on average workload on 1 DCA, actual usage may vary)


2 x 100Mb/1GB NIC installed

  • One on the public network
  • One on the DCA/cluster interconnect network

OS Localization

·       OS installation language and Local must be English.

·       Regional Settings configured must be also set for English (United States).

Note: if the Regional Settings was changed from a different language to English (US) – Please restart the Server otherwise the changes will not take effect.  

Necessary OS features

·       .Net must be activated on the host server

Security permissions

·       Installation must be done with administrator user or with a user who is a member of the administrators group.

·       For windows 2008/Vista/7 : Disabling Windows User Account Control (UAC)

Reboot after changing.

·       Disable the windows password complexity policy

Requirements for the Web Clients


  • Firefox 3.11 onwards
  • Google Chrome onwards
  • Internet Explorer 7,8, 9

Java JDK

Version 6 update 16   onwards


Version 10 onwards

Requirements for the Database Server

User Privileges and network configuration the Database nodes and segments :

** Steps 3 & 4 can be achieved by running script included with the installer



1.     “postgres” user access rights or any other user with superuser permissions. To create a dedicated user :






2.     Linux/Unix root user access rights on all segment hosts (required for the agent installation phase only)


3.     Open up all segments to allow direct connection from the MoreVRP server :


Locate all pg_hba.conf files of all segments and add the following line at the end. X.X.X.X should be the MoreVRP server IP address (the IP that is on the interconnect network)


host all all X.X.X.X/32 trust


4.     Reload postgres configuration (doesn't require a downtime) by running this command on the master node.


gpstop -u

Network Firewall rules

From VRP Server to the managed segment hosts (including the master)

  • HAWQ master DB port (default 5432)
  • HAWQ Segment instance ports (default 40001 and above)
  • SSL – Port 25427

From the world to the More Server

(Used for WEB UI)

  • Port 9090
  • Port 9191
  • Port 9898

From the More Server to the SMTP server (For automatic emails and alerts)

  • SMTP – usually Port 25



Info required

Send information about the target DB environment to the support team (Through Zendesk)

·    Operating system name (segment hosts)

·    Operating system version (segment hosts)

·    Operating system bit level (32/64)

·    CPU type (X86, Itanium, Power4 etc)

Send more details about the PivotalVRP server environment to the support team (Through Zendesk)

·    OS version

·    OS service-pack level
