gpstop fails with "(Reason='list index out of range')"

Symptom

When users attempt to stop the database, gpstop fails with an error: "list index out of range". The error message is shown below:

Error Message:

20150909:23:59:30:107806 gpstop:mdw1:gpadmin-[CRITICAL]:-gpstop failed. (Reason='list index out of range') exiting...

Cause

The issue has been identified and worked on via JIRA ticket MPP-25896.

Resolution

Upgrade to GPDB version 4.3.6.1. The new version has this issue fixed.

Workaround

If you are on the affected version, follow the instructions as mentioned below:

  • Check if any of the Postgres process has been left over after gpstop.
gpssh -f all_host " ps -ef | grep postgres | grep -v grep "
  • If there is one, start the database in master only mode.
gpstart -m 
  • Issue gpstop again.
gpstop -af
