Error message "protocol "gpfdists" does not exist" seen when reading an external table

Environment

Product Version
Pivotal HDB (PHD) 1.3.x
Pivotal HD 3.0.x

Symptom

When reading data from an external table created using gpfdists (gpfdist with the --ssl  option) an error message "protocol "gpfdists" does not exist" is seen:

Error Message:

gpadmin=# select * from employees_ext_file_ssl;
ERROR: protocol "gpfdists" does not exist (seg0 slice1 amb171hawq.lab:40000 pid=114799)
gpadmin=#

Cause

This is a software defect in Pivotal HDB (PHD) 1.3.x.

Resolution

Permanent fix:

This issue is fixed in Pivotal HDB (PHD) 2.0. An upgrade should be performed once Pivotal HDB 2.0 is released.

Potential workarounds:

  • Use gpfdist without SSL (do not use --ssl option in the gpfdist command) and recreate the external table with gpfdist in the URL.

OR

  • Create an SSL tunnel between the ETL Server and the Pivotal HDB Master server, then use gpfdist without SSL.

OR

  • Export the data from your external application, securely move the data to HDFS and use PXF to import the data into HAWQ.
