When Connected to Greenplum, the DataDirect JDBC 5.1.1/5.1.3 Driver Generates a Huge Temp File at /tmp

  • Pivotal Greenplum Database (GPDB) 4.3.x
  • Operating System- Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.x
  • Progress DataDirect 5.1.1 and 5.1.3

When connected to GPDB using the DataDirect JDBC 5.1.1/5.1.3 driver, it will generate a huge temp file at /tmp/ directory. Each file has a size of around 7-10 GB. The temp file name is usually something similar to ddtbxxxx.tmp.

Temp files ddtb*.tmp are not cleaned up automatically when an application exits. When files are created on large queries where the temp buffer is filled, the overflow is written to disk.

According to Progress, this is a known issue and is fixed in the hotfix and the formal release of version 5.1.4 which can be downloaded from the Pivotal network here.
