|Pivotal Greenplum (GPDB)||4.3.x|
Users ask whether Pivotal Greenplum uses TCP/IP Multicast/broadcast protocols when communicating within the cluster.
Greenplum no longer uses TCP/IP as this has been depreciated and has been replaced by UPDIFC. In the next major release, only the UDPIFC interconnect type will be supported by Greenplum Database. TCP and UDP were the original mechanisms that were in service for a long time, but despite that proved to have some problems and stability issues. UDPIFC functionality is the most recent one and has proven to fix the shortcomings of TCP and UDP interconnect functionality in many situations. Because of this, we have deprecated TCP/UDP interconnect types and they are planned to be removed in the next major version of GPDB.
The Multicast/Broadcast protocols are not used for communication between segments in the cluster when sending data to each other. The Greenplum Database uses Unicast when sending data between the Database Segments.
