App-usage-worker App Crashes due to Out of Memory Issue in PCF®

Pivotal Cloud Foundry(PCF) Version 1.7.x

Under certain conditions, the app-usage-worker may crash due to Out Of Memory (OOM) issues and get the following error message:

2016-07-03T04:02:37.00+0200 app.crash app-usage-worker index: 0, reason: CRASHED, exit_description: 2 error(s) occurred:

* Exited with status 255 (out of memory)
* cancelled
2016-07-04T08:44:03.19+0200 [API/0] OUT App instance exited with guid bcb9ec31-ead8-4fb0-b02e-2afa1933091c payload: {"instance"=>"44982d8e-7d8b-4620-65b7-586f6c3b0370", "index"=>0, "reason"=>"CRASHED", "exit_description"=>"2 error(s) occurred:\n\n* Exited with status 255 (out of memory)\n* cancelled", "crash_count"=>24, "crash_timestamp"=>1467614643186633967, "version"=>"a8a3f081-5c0a-44a2-8b02-109ca98730bd"}

This error message is caused by a bug and a potential memory-leak issue in Ruby. Regarding the bug, several internal tables are filled with duplicated records. In terms of the potential memory leak issue, more details can be found here.

Pivotal Cloud Foundry engineers have a code fix for this issue which is currently being tested and has yet to be released.  In the meantime, you can simply ignore the crash errors.  The PCF platform will handle these automatically by restarting the app-usage-worker when it has crashed.

Additional Information

This article will be updated when the fix is generally available.
