GPLOAD Fails with ERROR "could not translate host name "xxxxx", port "8000" to address"

Environment

  • Pivotal Greenplum Database (GPDB) 4.3.x
  • Operating System- Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.x

Symptom

GPLOAD fails with the following error on one host.

Error Message:

ERROR: could not translate host name "xxxxx", port "8000" to address: Name or service not known (cdbuti\ l.c:733)  (seg3 slice1 sdw1.gphd.local:1028 pid=207946) (cdbdisp.c:1326)

Cause 

gpadmin user did not have permission to read /etc/hosts file on segment nodes. Hardware check was done on all nodes and was found to be fine.

Resolution

Check the permissions on /etc/hosts file and set permission for /etc/hosts to 644

Example:

chmod 644 /etc/hosts
