gpexpand Error : Existing expansion state could not be determined

Overview

gpexpand command fails : Existing expansion state could not be determined, but a gpexpand schema already exists. There are no other errors in the log files providing more details.

This is caused when database is started in the restricted mode that prevents the gpexpand from completing.

Error message:

20160822:10:33:23:011650 gpexpand:bdtcstr38n1:gpadmin-[ERROR]:-gpexpand failed: Error while trying to query the gpexpand schema: Existing expansion state could not be determined, but a gpexpand schema already exists. Cannot proceed.

Resolution

Stop and restart the database in normal mode and then restart gpexpand:

gpstop -aM fast

gpstart -a

gpexpand -d xx.xx.xx -n x
