Bind custom New Relic Instance to a Ruby App on PWS

Environment

Pivotal Web Services (PWS): v.205

Ruby buildpack: v1.3.0

Purpose

Provide a way to bind a custom, not marketplace, New Relic instance to an application on Pivotal Web Services. It should be noted that it's recommended to use marketplace services from PWS marketplace, however, there are circumstances when there are legacy stand-alone New Relic instances that need to be bound to applications.

Procedure

In this example, we will show how to connect to custom New Relic instance (not from PWS marketplace) to a sample rails app.

  1. Obtain New Relic instance credentials from the vendor.

  2. Fork the following application from github: https://github.com/cloudfoundry-samples/rails_sample_app

  3. Modify the following file https://github.com/cloudfoundry-samples/rails_sample_app/blob/newrelic/config/newrelic.yml#L19 and supply appropriate New Relic instance credentials.

Additional notes

It’s recommended to use New Relic and other service offerings from PWS marketplace hence they provide auto-binding without the need to manually supply credentials.
